I have a new studio set up with adjoining gallery space! I'm cleaning house! Have new painting ideas and lots of projects. I love starting projects.... So time for a new blog too?... or just an update? I thought I'd start a new one but all the fun, fancy names are taken... And a theme? Nah. I am not into specialization. I treat everything like an art project-- home improvements, the garden, everything ...
SO tell me what you'd like to read and see here. Really. I'm full of opinions and I know a few facts...And I really like starting things. Not important. Here we are now. AND here is that painting you were waiting for...
In January I took class in Seattle. Painting in the Venetian Tradition, taught by Geoffrey Laurence. It was awesome and inspiring. So here is my first painting using this technique. This is the third layer. The light blue guitar will, in the end, be red. What good is a holiday if you don't waste a couple hours on nonsense such as this? These are all things found in the yard while digging in preparation for the garden and patio. My favorite...The little convertible with the orange drips on the hood and the green seats. Ok so I can't figure out how to get the blog on my website to work so we're stuck with this one. I'm not much of a web Master. So... Besides trying to understand websites this week, I've made new frames out of old frames and made canvases to fit them. I made postcards. I also made a pair of earrings. I meant to take another pic to show the curls better but naturally, my camera battery ran out. The squares and curls are both hammered silver. I didn't know I had so many fine models around the house. And this isn't even all of them! Except the elephants, I inherited from my grandparents, all were gifts. I chose this group for their colors and shapes. I realized after working out arrangements for a while, that they were all either mythological or legendary animals. All the better!

There is still a lot of work to do. Lots of details to add. It's getting there though.

Atelier is French for “Artist Studio” and also refers to a method of teaching representational art techniques taught in the 15-19th centuries. It’s a whole new approach to drawing for me. So far, I’ve had to do some adjusting, but it’s going well. At the end of the grant year (March 2011) I’ll display the work I’ve done and write about my experience. This is my first finished class drawing (above). I'm pretty happy with this painting--just a little more nit picking to do. I think the next "Back to Life" painting will be real still life OBJECTS.

I got a little work done before I headed out for my Christmas trip. Brightened up some of the leaves. It didn't get a full second layer. Returned yesterday to find many leaves missing. Yikes! So I stayed up late working on it last night. And here it is. Not bad for my first "back to life" painting. I think I'll mess with it a little more...I want that leading red leaf to have more richness. It's gone now so I have to remember....I remember it was not so pink. I think the big green leaf looks like its backwards. I'm not sure how to change that...but that's life- right?Artist Unboundhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13302019613716899028noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36803323.post-42215759560084586572009-12-21T22:37:00.000-08:002009-12-21T22:39:16.347-08:00Poinsettia
First layer of paint is done. It's 8x10". Pretty much life size. I did one on canvas and one on masonite so I can decide finally which i like best. I've worked on both surfaces many times but never one right after the other--giving it real thought. Definitely like the canvas better. Although I do like the solidity of the panel, I like the way the paint handles and looks on the canvas best. I may finish them both anyway...we'll see.

I thought if any model could hold a pose it would be a plant. But she's lost a leaf and made a few adjustments. It's not a big deal like losing an actor in mid production but it has me worrying about other leaves--the pale one in front is next. Please hold out for another day!
And I haven't done a newsletter So.... Here we are.
In my last newsletter, I said I was working on a painting of Modesty. I was and I hoped to have it ready for First Friday Gallery Tour. But alas it is still not ready--can't rush a good thing right? Which could get me on a rambling about crappy modern art but I will stop myself and stick to the point which is...I got sidetracked (this time it's good). I got to thinking (again) it would help if I had a model--I always model myself. It would help if I could paint like the old masters.
I started looking for workshops again. I looked few years ago but didn't find anything financially accessible. I applied for a grant and didn't get it. Damn! Trying again though. I found Lafayette Atelier (an hour away) where they teach classical painting. Yea! And I'm applying for another grant. This time I'm going to get it!
In the mean time, I decided to do some practicing on my own--back to Life Drawing. I set up a poinsettia I bought to give. It will be a belated gift now that it's become my model. Of course I couldn't pick a more simple subject---I'm getting it though. I did a drawing and probably took it farther than I needed too but I was into it. I've moved onto the painting now. I'll post it later...first things first--the drawing.
And a photo of the plant. I discovered it's difficult to get the camera to really see what I'm seeing but it's close enough. The photo is just so you can get an idea. Cool stuff. I love the transparency. Each layer was left to set up before the next was added. Phil was great model. I also like to have fun with titles. This fallen angel remains a good angel.
I have had the angel topper for years. I think I got it before I could legally buy alcohol! Oh my! It was originally plain white. I painted it to make it look old--back then before I knew that what I was doing is a popular decorative painting technique called aging.
It's tempting to keep this one for myself...but I like to share.Artist Unboundhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13302019613716899028noreply@blogger.com0
